Dear CAP members and the larger palynology/paleobotany community,

Long-time CAP member Jean-Nicolas Haas, current president of the International Federation of Palynological Societies (IFPS), has invited us to prepare a bid to host the 2024 International Palynological Congress (IPC).  CAP’s Councillor to IFPS, Francine McCarthy, has been in communication with the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and Steve Manchester, President of the International Organization of Palaeobotany (IOP) has agreed to assist the small Canadian paleobotanical community in preparing a bid to host a joint IPC-IOP Congress in Toronto. This would be the perfect opportunity to showcase the great work accomplished by CAP members and the amazing Canadian palynological record!

The idea already received wide support both within and beyond CAP ranks and we are seeking ideas, feedback or comments on the bid currently being prepared. The CAP Executive is looking for volunteers to assist in promoting Canada as host to the palynological and paleobotanical communities in late August 2024.

Proximity to Toronto is not required in this digital age, so we welcome anyone interested in suggesting potential special sessions, workshops or field trips to contact us.  Francine will be coordinating CAP efforts and presenting the bid in Prague, with the assistance of Florin Pendea and any other CAP members in attendance.

Some key points:

  • 2024 IPC would be held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, second last week of August 2024
  • Field trips would focus on Niagara (the falls, Niagara on the Lake, wineries and the Carolinian Forest) with possible further locations also being considered (e.g., Joggins, NS)
  • Possible partnering organisations for the bid include AASP-The Palynological Society and the International Organisation of Palaeobotany (IOP), for a “2024 ICP-AASP-IOP Joint Meeting”
  • CAP is seeking ~6 volunteers to form a CAP committee overseeing the bid and conference preparation. Please contact Francine McCarthy (fmccarthy[at]brocku[dot]ca) if you are interested.
